Rob Vaux

Tomatometer-approved critic
Biography:

A native Californian, Rob Vaux grew up in the greater Los Angeles area before attending college in Minnesota and graduate school in Syracuse, NY. He moved back to So Cal after earning his M.A. and currently works as a writer and editor, as well as serving as a film critic for Mania.com and The Sci-Fi Movie Page. He's also a faithful fan of the Anaheim Angels, though he considers the Rally Monkey a dubious asset at best. He lives in the suburbs, has three black cats, and probably liked The Phantom Menace more than you.

Favorites:

Brazil, The Third Man, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Throne of Blood, West Side Story, Wings of Desire, Miller's Crossing, John Carpenter's The Thing, and too many others to count. The Lord of the Rings is moving up with a bullet.

Planet Earth: Season 1 (2006) 100% EDIT “The sheer variety on display ensure that the series never wears out its welcome, and it's surprising how quickly one gets wrapped up in the narratives on display.” – Collider Apr 10, 2019 Full Review Wolverine and the X-Men: Season 1 (2009) 67% EDIT “Wolverine and the X-Men also succeeds in bringing the sheer variety of characters to life without making the show feel crowded.” – Collider Feb 19, 2019 Full Review Key & Peele: Season 2 (2012) 100% EDIT “Not every sketch works, of course, and the first two seasons of Key & Peele carry their share of misfires. But at least one good piece accompanies every bad one.” – Collider Sep 5, 2018 Full Review Key & Peele: Season 1 (2012) 94% EDIT “The good news is that the material makes its own gravy, and you can find something worthwhile no matter which episode you watch.” – Collider Sep 5, 2018 Full Review Shazam!: Season 1 (1974) 40% EDIT “You start to smile in spite of yourself, and those of a certain age may find themselves reminiscing on the wide-eyed innocence of their youth.” – Collider Jul 10, 2018 Full Review Batman: The Brave and the Bold: Season 2 (2009) 4/5 EDIT “Everyone loves Nolan's films, and the grim, Gothic Dark Knight won't be diminished by the silliness here. But it's nice to see a lighter touch now and then, and The Brave and the Bold delivers it in supremely entertaining fashion.” – Sci-Fi Movie Page Jul 6, 2018 Full Review The Six Million Dollar Man: Season 1 (1973) 88% EDIT “For 70s kitsch, it ranks second to none, and while we can no longer take it as seriously as it clearly takes itself, that doesn't mean it lacks in entertainment value.” – Collider May 8, 2018 Full Review Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: Season 1 (2008) 76% B- EDIT “Things may get worse before they get better (we'll see how McG's movie does next year), but for now, The Sarah Connor Chronicles is holding the line with reasonable aplomb.” – Flipside Movie Emporium Apr 16, 2018 Full Review Star Trek: Enterprise: Season 1 (2001) 75% EDIT “It's not perfect, but its attempts to find a different vibe for Star Trek produce some surprisingly good stuff.” – Collider Oct 27, 2017 Full Review Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season 1 (1987) 91% EDIT “Like a lot of Part Ones, this first season did a lot of unglamorous grunt work for the benefit of later entries.” – Collider Oct 3, 2017 Full Review Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season 3 (1989) 100% EDIT “TNG had already found its own voice in the second season, as it stepped out of the original series' shadow and stood alone as its own entity. Here, it fully developed its potential for the first time, and gave us all a reason to tune in every week.” – Collider Oct 2, 2017 Full Review Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season 2 (1988) 57% EDIT “Things were never the same after Season Two, when TNG grew up, and the Enterprise-D truly entered uncharted territory.” – Collider Oct 2, 2017 Full Review
