U.S. soldier Frank Dux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) has come to Hong Kong to be accepted into the Kumite, a highly secret and extremely violent martial-arts competition. While trying to gain access into the underground world of clandestine fighters, he also has to avoid military officers who consider him to be AWOL. After enduring a difficult training and beginning a romance with journalist Janice Kent (Leah Ayres), Frank is given the opportunity to fight. But can he survive?

The contest format is hopelessly repetitive and inert, the characters would seem underdeveloped in a comic book, and the restricted setting ensures that the action will never develop any real scale or velocity.

The movie is great. I still remember seeing it as a kid and absolutely loving it. But different strokes for different folks. The critics will never like it because..well lets face it they are more or less the LA crowd with limp wrists who stick their pinky out as they drink their white wine. This is more for the the type of guy that chugs a beer and then smashes it on his forehead but realistically the fight is awesome. The fights are spectacular and just the right amount of gore. Watching it is so nostalgic for me. The movie is iconic plain and simple.

Grew up watching this. I’m 40 years old in 2026 and I would still watch it again and again . Yes the acting isn’t great and blah blah blah , it’s exactly how it’s supposed to be !!

It's definitely cheesy, but that's what makes it so good. Lots of slow motion fighting shots that are iconic. The arena they fight in is very captivating.

Kumite!Kumite!Kumite! it aged so well never mind the critics, as always. It has bad acting? yes, but growing up with this was awesome, specially for the time it was made it was so cheap to make and made millions for a reason, people comenting this were not even born yet to understand the value
