Its written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, so of course the comedy is a fairly blunt, with some moderate/strong sex references and strong language featured but then I suppose that does give it more of an authentic feel. It has a quirky feel to it, with the characters being a bit stereotyped in terms of being 'lairy lads', working class disillusioned people feeling not so motivated to work with 'the system'. That aside, I enjoyed the musical score, with numerous chart its of the 1970s played (including a scene featuring Northern Soul) and I liked that the film had a decent energetic feel to it, which is perhaps a bit ironic given some of the characters seem anything but motivated to do alot - its mostly down to the talk of dreams of a better life and the soundtrack I suppose. If you don't like strong language (including the c-bomb) then this is probably best avoided but otherwise its worth a watch. However, I didn't feel it stood out as an especially memorable film as such, though the characters are alright. I suppose I felt it was a bit too grim but then, to be fair to the writers etc., given the films setting, it wouldn't be authentic if it wasn't. I felt that it had the potential to be made into a TV series - it had the feel of a feature length TV program episode actually, moreso that than a film as such. Of course Merchant and Gervais are well known and very popular for the successful TV series they've made. To me, this was an ok film, not great but not awful - its bleak in one regard but there is a slim sense of hope present as well. I don't think I would especially recommend this as such but there are worse films around. See more clive e @Darto6 04/30/2022 I loved it.
