Dahlia (Jennifer Connelly) wants to move away from her ex-husband, Kyle (Dougray Scott), and take her daughter, Ceci (Ariel Gade), with her. Relocating to a dreary tower block, Dahlia and Ceci discover eerie, dark water leaking through the ceiling of their new apartment. Dahlia petitions the supervisor (Pete Postlethwaite) and the building's owner (John C. Reilly) to fix the leak, yet it only gets worse. Now having nightmares about the dripping, Dahlia is driven to confront the problem herself.

This dank, dark and disturbing psychological horror film is a remake of a Hideo Nakata chiller, but the film it most evokes is Roman Polanski's Repulsion, another tale of mental instability and bad real estate.

That fatal flaw that this shares with the original is the best part of the film being in the initial plot-revealing 20 minutes. From here, it fails to build on the tension.

The supporting characters, in fact, are the most enjoyable part of the film, often more enjoyable than Connelly or Gade, each taking great advantage of their scenes to create real people in a short space of time.

It was a weird movie, also sad because it made me think of so many people that have to live in these old high rise buildings run by slumlords who do not care to improve the living conditions of the people living there.

Dark Water is an exceptionally dull and lifeless American remake that failed to make any significant impact. It managed to build some suspense, but ultimately, the film led nowhere without any genuine fear factor. Grading: D-

This film should not be confused with a higher rated, newer film called Dark Waters. This is simply “Dark Water”. Do not be deceived as I was into watching this movie. How the director had the time to get actual actors to agree to this movie, without taking the time to form more than ten minutes of plot, is beyond me. At first, it seems promising… a low lit building, leaking pipes, and a single mom in distress. However, you will keep waiting for the story to start, feeling like you are getting creepy clues and surely more depth and connection will be coming. Then, before you know it, an hour and a half has gone by, a mom dies, and it’s the worst movie you’ve ever seen.

Synopsis
