See more Tara D @RT77676858 01/12/2024 A slice-of-life family drama that seems better suited for the stage than cinema. Every performance is spectacular which each actor delivering a complete living, breathing human being that feels like someone you know (even if you've never had the misfortune of crossing paths with someone exactly like them). As is the case with much of Baumback's work, it seems the suffering of the characters-and ours vicariously as we watch them stumble tactlessly thru micromoments of their experience-is in vain without the redemption of growth or the catharsis of major disaster. Baumback's direction offers so much compassion for these imperfect people and missteps they choose that a loyal viewer might almost feel lost in a morally relativistic quagmire with them. It is clear that many of these humans just outright suck but we don't get much opportunity to hate them before getting consumed back up into their perspective. Although belabored humor infuses several moments of the film nothing actually feels too funny as the overall unease of the circumstances and the young folks involved in this nightmare seem more and more at risk. My high rating reflects the accuracy with which Margot's arrival at the wedding pinpoints the distress of being stuck in a tortured family. But my disinterest in engaging meaningfully in the unsatisfactory emotional life it represents keeps it from being a truly resonant, rewatchable picture.
