Sam Raimi’s direction gives the film a playful tone, balancing whimsy with darker elements that hint at familiar origins. The screenplay is inconsistent. Certain plot beats feel underdeveloped, and giving the witches multiple names creates unnecessary confusion, weakening the mythology. Some story elements feel emotionally thin. James Franco brings charm to the role of Oz, while Mila Kunis delivers a solid performance despite questionable character choices. Michelle Williams adds warmth and grace, helping ground the story. Ultimately, while flawed, the film offers enough creativity and visual flair to make it a fun reimagining rather than a hollow retread.! But it has some of the ugliest, blatant, & unconvincing uses of CGI I’ve ever seen. Painful to get through due to terrible writing & offensively careless acting. A muddled mess of tones that won’t ever commit to a solid idea. Raimi’s style pokes through here & there in enjoyable ways but it’s always smothered by Disney’s lifeless attempts at mass appeal.
