It looks like they were going for some creative old time photography, but it just does not work and ruined the movie for me. See more Blake- N @PBSAniDom May 27 Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a very creative sci-fi adventure film that deserves more appreciation for its unique style and ambitious presentation. The movie feels like a classic pulp comic brought to life with a futuristic twist. One of the strongest parts of the film is its visual design. The retro atmosphere, combined with the stylized effects and world-building, gives the movie a distinct identity that still stands out today. The cast does a solid job keeping the adventure entertaining, and the action scenes are fun without taking themselves too seriously. While the story may not be perfect, the film’s charm and imagination help carry the experience. Overall, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a good film to watch for fans of old-school sci-fi adventures and visually creative movies. It’s unique, and most importantly, it’s genuine. Everyone in the film takes it seriously, and that’s why it works. Genuine steam punk setting...loved the theme...loved the plot...love Gwenyth...loved Jude...walked out hoping there would be a sequel. I have probably watched it 50 times on streaming TV. See more Hughe J @Hughe Sep 26 Sky Captain was released in theatres in 2004 and has an impressive cast with Angelina Jolie, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Gambon, Gyneth Paltrow, and Jude Law all making appearances. It's set in 1939 where giant robots are attacking New York and the brave Sky Captain and his band of mercenaries must defeat them from their flying carrier. It obviously pays homage to the 1930 serials and the art style combined with the look and feel of a new age digital release were quite stunning. This movie's CGI was way ahead of it's time and was really interesting to watch, unfortunately the plot and acting didn't keep pace. The movie's plot, again with that throw back feel, was slow and often dull, and actors often felt like an afterthought to all of the CGI. I liked the movie overall but this isn't going to be for everyone and while the almost steampunk CGI was cool, it wasn't enough to save the movie.
