Audience Reviews for Unnatural
Jul 31, 2016I don't know how long this review will be, because part of me feels that if it does go long it'll just be repeating the same points ad nauseam, but this movie is really fucking bad. Not even that it's incompetently put together, it's just a monster movie that literally has no reason to exist other than, as I pointed out in my previous review, to cash in on a the most loyal horror audience that would, literally, consume just about anything to get their horror fix. Those are the only people this film would satisfy. This was released under After Dark's 8 Films to Die For, as if that was supposed to entice me into thinking that this might be a good movie. Though I will admit that that's not really a fair thing to say, since I'm sure there's been some good movies released with that tag attached, but it's not like it inspires a lot of faith to begin with because, if the film was good enough, somebody else would've picked them up and actually done something with them. Realistically speaking, however, this movie is so bad that the tag was probably the only chance the crew had of getting their film out there. Horror films are, seemingly, made every day on a shoestring budget, so someone out there would've given this film a shot anyway. It just so happened it was the After Dark people. I hope this choice isn't representative of the quality of the other films chosen to represent the 8 Films to Die For for 2015. First things first, there's literally nothing going on in the film. It's a basic monster film as far as set-up goes. There's nothing special about the setting or the execution of its concept. It's one of the deadest and uninteresting horror films I've seen in a long time. There's just nothing about it that's inspired or even close to being remotely intriguing. Like I don't even know how it was humanly possible to have as uninspired a horror movie as this one. Even the monster itself, a hybrid of a wolf and polar bear, is terribly lazy. Not to mention that the costume for the monster is just absolutely fucking dreadful. Just the drizzling shits. I appreciate the fact that they did try to use actual make-up instead of CGi, but the costume is terrible. It doesn't look like an abomination of science, it just looks like a costume you would get at Party City for Halloween. Actually, there was a movie I saw a month or so ago called Grassroots and one of the characters had a polar bear costume that he would wear every so often. This polar bear/wolf reminded me of that costume. So, yea, it's awful. They realize its awfulness and they only show you bits, like in Jaws, but when they do show more of it, the illusion is just ruined. It's hard to buy into a movie when its monster lacks a certain intimidation factor. Like the characters just end up looking really dumb to be scared of something so ridiculous looking. The acting is pretty bad, none of the characters have any legitimate personalities, they're just walking cliches and stereotypes. At least James Remar has a great voice and he's got some presence as a character actor. Other than that, there's literally nothing of quality in this movie to speak of. Not even the gore did anything for me. Look, it's not like this film is offensively bad, like Date Movie or The Village, but this is still a terrible movie. It's horrifyingly lazy, actually the scariest thing about the film, and poorly executed. Cannot recommend this film in the slightest, it offers absolutely nothing that has any actual value. It's not even entertainingly bad. Terrible.Jesse O Super Reviewer
