Forget the challenge between Old Gods and New Gods, the real challenge in the world of American Gods is going to be for the show to hold onto viewers tempted to jump ship after the very rocky season-two premiere.

The second episode of the series is split between four groups of characters... all of which jolt the storyline into a disjointed, uneven thread that only just salvages itself with the unmissable Mad Sweeney / Laura chemistry and a powerful finale.

The Beguiling Man, as an episode, is successful in providing the hook of what drives Shadow: it's his need to follow and to believe in someone, rather than something. When that someone fails, the anger boils to the top, and he becomes reckless.
