Drop Dead Diva: Season 1 (2009)

SEASON:

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: Drop Dead Diva's lightweight and somewhat cliche' fare is made vastly more palatable by the breakout performance of its lead, Brooke Elliott.

Tv Season Info

Season 1 of this legal comedy-drama begins when beautiful but shallow model Deb (Brooke D'Orsay) dies in a car accident. When she returns to the land of the living, she does so as the brilliant, hard-working and plus-size attorney Jane Bingum (Brooke Elliott). Deb faces many hurdles as she adjusts to Jane's life, including working with the former love of her life, Grayson (Jackson Hurst), as he mourns her death and attempts to move on, dealing with Jane's coworker and rival Kim (Kate Levering) and learning valuable lessons about inner beauty and personal acceptance. Luckily, she has April (Stacy Barrett), her best friend and the only human who knows her predicament, and Fred (Ben Feldman), her guardian angel, to help support and guide her through the ups and downs of her new life. Paula Abdul and Rosie O'Donnell both have recurring roles as judges throughout the season.

Of course, it wouldn't have been quite so amusing if the show's big issue-the way that big women are desexualized, taken for granted, and generally treated shoddily-were mishandled. But so far, at least, it hasn't been.

It's "Legally Blonde" meets "Dead Like Me." Against all odds, that turns out to be an odd-couple combo that results in a light, fun series - ideal fizzy entertainment for summer.

The cleverest thing about Drop Dead Diva is its title - and if, over its 13-week run, the writing rises to that level of droll wit, this could turn out to be the TV equivalent of a good old-fashioned summer beach read.

The Lifetime press materials quote from a half-dozen women's groups, which heap praise on the network for creating a plus-size role model. But in truth, this show is filled with mixed messages about the links between appearance and self-esteem.

While some of it was enjoyable, most of it made me roll my eyes and/or cringe.

This Legally Blonde/Freaky Friday concoction is thoroughly daft but it's also pleasingly bright and breezy, and serves as a great introduction to Brooke Elliott, who is likeable and effective in the double-sided lead role.

A minor delight for viewers who seek engaging escapist fare.

Newcomer Brooke Elliott is both charming and surprisingly credible as Jane-inhabited-by-Deb. She's a find.

What might have been an intriguing lesson in self-perception turns into parody rather than perceptive insight, and "Diva" cuts itself off at the (fat) knees.

While it sounds pedantic, downright corny, and done to death, Drop Dead Diva is actually fun, funny and sometimes and in some ways even touching.
