Critic Reviews for See

Preacher won't let you rest easy. Two episodes in, and that's the strongest thing about the newborn series so far.

The opening scene may be inscrutable for non-comics readers, but it made me grin.

Such a fun, propulsive second episode without the normal post-pilot drop-off is both an achievement in of itself, and a great sign for the rest of Season 1 and beyond.

Everyone watching loses here: fans of the comic get a story that drifts even further from the tone and characters in the source material, while new viewers get a show that's treading water while trying to get by on spooky goings-on.

Indeed, "See" proves to be every bit as rich as the pilot entry, with outstanding visuals, wonderfully demented set pieces and great character moments that provides the series with a thematic throughline beneath all the blood and carnage.

The fact that Preacher has the confidence and the ability to pull off an hour of television that hops so nimbly between gory silliness and raw emotional pain remains hugely impressive.

With some wacky introductions, a gonzo tone and lead characters who I find to be completely entertaining to watch, the second episode of Preacher does a fine job of not just restaging the pilot episode to make sure we have a read on things.

Annville's friendly neighborhood vampire also proves himself a handy guard dog, dispatching of the mysterious duo who came to kill Jesse in another riotously entertaining bloody set piece.

I had little idea what the hell was happening for a lot of that church sequence, but as the chainsaw began pulling the severed arm along the floor towards Jesse's prone, vulnerable body, I nearly burst into applause at the craziness of it all.
