05/20/2022 As an avid fan of Project Runway, I was excited finding another fashion competition show to watch on top of really fun shows like Next in Fashion and Making the Cut. Stitched has an interesting format where they feature four different people per episode with 3 challenges an episode. While I wouldn't be able to follow the growth and journey of the contestants like I could in the other shows mentioned, I felt it was a fresh way to display the work and talent of a wide variety of designers. The challenges were fun and really tested and challenged the comfort zones of many contestants, which is fun to see if they overcome and produce a fantastic look. However, past this is where the show falls short for someone wanting a deeper look into fashion. Behind the scenes, the contestants are not all established designers in the sense of high fashion, but the entirety of judging is based on runway/high fashion. Many are put at a disadvantage and there are some clear frontrunners in each episode, or none at all which makes the entire episode underwhelming. Aside from that, the judging tends to be so superficial and this is probably the first show where I disagreed with about 70% of the "critiques." It feels manufactured so that there are mixed reviews per garment to keep the viewers guessing on who might go home, rather than an intellectual judgment consisting of details and critical thought. There is no critique that felt substantial to me based on the designer's concept and ideas. They would say something, but not quite explain what parts didn't work, more just that they didn't like some part of the garment. Or something like they couldn't see who the contestant was as a designer in the first challenge, and then boot them off. I think a better critique would be that the garment feels generic and doesn't show off any outstanding design elements, which this whole show is based on. Perhaps it was because of time in the episode, but this made me feel like the judges were not very credible, despite their real life credentials. The most valid critiques I could see were based on technical execution, but they made each challenge only four hours. Even the BEST on Project Runway struggled with single day challenges, so it's hard to expect high fashion looks that are well-executed without some underwhelming aspects in the design. While entertaining to watch, this show is nothing like the other shows I mentioned, which all feature an in-depth look into the fashion world and designer perspective that the everyday person is not privy to. The bulk of contestants here feel low-concept in comparison to the more talented and experienced designers I've seen on other shows, so the finished garments were not always exciting to see (especially because the scenes themselves spoil the final reveal). I think if this were more of bringing an "everyday" or rookie designer to the competition rather than a random mishmash of inexperienced and experienced clothesmakers, along with more time per challenge, I would not have been as underwhelmed. Overall it feels like a lower production version of other fashion shows I've seen, but enough to pass the time regardless. See more Read all reviews
