Episodes
New heartfelt comedy drama from Aisling Bea. Four months after checking out of a rehab facility following a 'teeny weeny nervous breakdown,' Aine is still putting on a brave face for her concerned sister Shona. When Aine is dropped from a dinner party invitation, she calls an old friend from rehab for some company. But things take an awkward turn when she makes an unexpected move on him. At a networking event, Shona connects with a new friend, Charlotte.
Aine is interviewed for a private tutoring job teaching English to a young French boy, Etienne who's recently lost his mother and has found himself now living in London with his father Richard who he barely knows.
Aine and Richard's relationship gets complicated when she is inadvertently invited for dinner but leaves early after a misunderstanding. Aine pretends she has rats so she can spend the weekend with Shona, much to the annoyance of Vish.
Aine and Shona's mother is over from Ireland and they head out of town to visit Vish's family. Tensions are high between Aine and her mother who haven't spoken in months and Shona feels stuck in the middle.
A text from her ex Freddie catches Aine by surprise and brings him back into her life for better or for worse. A night out with Bradley and his friends ends badly when she finds her friend Tom from rehab drunk and a fight breaks out.
Romantic feelings emerge between Aine and Richard but she's caught off guard when she turns up unexpectedly to find another woman in his house. Vish proposes to Shona but Aine and Shona fight over the secrets they've been keeping from each other.

Critic Reviews for This Way Up Season 1
All Critics (23) | Top Critics (14) | Fresh (21) | Rotten (2)
If you're missing Fleabag, here's your fix. This Way Up freely acknowledges the debt.
"This Way Up" makes the wise choice to treat its six-episode season as a reason to luxuriate in smaller moments rather than speed through them for the sake of shoehorning in extra plot developments.
Small in scope, infinitely charming, and intermittently devastating.
It's very good, and it's warm and clever, and it will - or would - precisely hit the spot for a lot of people, if only they can find it.
There has been a lot of mental health depicted on TV and it's always on the way down. What I like about this one is it deals with trying to put yourself back together, rather than falling apart.
It's a smart, sweet, sad, winning little show, and the season goes down easily in one burst.
Strong family love, great characters in low-key UK import.
All the characters are immensely likable, but not in a subversive way: They are genuinely lovely, funny, and human. While This Way Up aches at times, it's too busy making the viewer laugh to wallow in it.
It's a tribute to both the characterisation and script that the unflinching humour in a series built around fragile mental health never strays too close to either the exploitative or maudlin.
Bea and Horgan's performances are smart, playful, nimble, and rooted in empathy.
This Way Up takes the idea of happy-sad television to a new level, one that is ultimately rewarding.
This Way Up remains irresistible and not just because it's an easy and enjoyable binge-watch. Aisling Bea's performance is dynamic...

Sep 07, 2020Phenomenal show! Reminded me of Fleabag but more wholesome, Catastrophe but without the main relationship. The main character is hilarious and I love the sister relationship and the will they/won't they plot line. The mental health struggles of the main character rang true. Also love the South Asian representation!!

Aug 29, 2020This is such a funny and raw show. It can get a bit cringe at moments, but we've all had those awkward experiences in life. Great cast, and well worth watching!
