Critic Consensus: Thanks to a reliable returning cast, some fresh new faces, and sharp direction, True Blood still manages a deft blend of sexy melodrama, satire, campy fun, and horror.

Critic Reviews for True Blood: Season 4
All Critics (14) | Top Critics (5) | Fresh (10) | Rotten (4)
It's a little wearing sometimes, to be honest, though it has enough narrative strength to keep hard-core fans happy.

It's getting a little long in the tooth now, but new blood is still capable of energizing True Blood.

The problem with True Blood at this point is that there isn't any room to breathe.
True Blood returns with too many new characters, not enough time with the characters I like, a general evasion of the most prickly parts of last season's finale, and some plodding hints at a lumbering dramatic direction for this season.
If you're addicted to True Blood's brand of smoldering melodrama, well, there's a lot of it this season. And it looks as though about half of it might actually be worth watching.
As this story has lost credibility, the vampires as a plausible metaphor for "accepting difference" is falling apart.
