Critics Consensus

Although there are laughs to be had in Dr. Dolittle 2, its preoccupation with toilet humor and Murphy's restrained performance makes this a missed opportunity.

Animal-vet antics a la Murphy; some potty humor. Go to Full Review

Murphy, who was upstaged by the talking animals in the original, brings bite as well as bark to the funnier sequel. Go to Full Review

A likeable, sporadically funny movie that will satisfy the less demanding tot. Go to Full Review

This sequel is crazy in a mellow way. Odds are you will pronounce it either dull or charming. Go to Full Review

The animals are adorable, the plot simple and the jokes funny. Don't be surprised if your kids want to "talk to the animals", not to mention bring some of them home, after seeing this one! Go to Full Review

Oz S @Ozsoffy 5d Dr. Dolittle 2 is an improvement over the first movie. This time there is a clearer storyline, better progression, and a few side plots that help keep things moving, especially the stories involving the daughter, the dog, and the bear. The film feels more structured and connected, rather than a collection of random animal encounters. Eddie Murphy remains a likable lead, but surprisingly the movie isn’t particularly funny. His performance leans more toward family-friendly drama than comedy. The biggest weakness is scale. The film builds toward a conflict that should feel important, but the finale feels oddly small and understated. The directing relies heavily on close and medium shots, making events that are supposed to feel significant seem confined and modest. Nothing is especially bad, but very little is memorable either. It’s a harmless family movie that works better than its predecessor, yet never rises above average entertainment.
