Critics Consensus

Philadelphia indulges in some unfortunate clichés in its quest to impart a meaningful message, but its stellar cast and sensitive direction are more than enough to compensate.

Philadelphia is a heartbreakingly mediocre movie. It’s dishonest, it’s often legally, medically, and politically inaccurate, and it breaks my heart that I must say it’s simply not good enough and I’d rather people not see it at all. Go to Full Review

Philadelphia may not be the film Demme's fans expect--its emotionalism is unfiltered by cool. But it has the power to open more than a few blinkered hearts. Go to Full Review

[An] extremely well-made message picture about tolerance, justice and discrimination is pitched at mainstream audiences, befitting its position as the first major Hollywood film to directly tackle the disease. Go to Full Review

Demme's well-intentioned character study meets courtroom activist drama is over-directed and borders on offensive at times. Of the two leads, Washington should have gotten the awards attention Go to Full Review

Tom Hanks is superb as a smart lawyer dying of AIDS who sues his former employers with the help of Denzel Washington, who matches Hanks' work note for note. Go to Full Review

Ian W. @iwaldman 4h I’ve seen some describe this movie as a LGBTQ+ movie made for a straight audience. Although I think that may be partially true, I don’t think that takes away from its impact or is necessarily a critique of the film. When you look at when this film was released, it speaks even more to how important and necessary it was. Would there be different casting decisions today? Absolutely, but I thought Tom Hanks was terrific and gave a heartbreaking performance. Denzel Washington was also great. His character was far from perfect, but I loved how we were able to watch his growth in real time. I miss films like this, where it has a feeling of everyday life to it. With the film being called ‘Philadelphia’ it was nice that it actually felt like we were living in Philadelphia for a short while. The atmosphere was palpable, both geographically and culturally. Although the story was emotional, there was a sense of warmth to the film that can only be attributed to the incredible direction of the film See more Ryan F @RT74441166 Apr 29 A little too depressing for me! I don't think Tom Hanks should've gotten the oscar! Denzel Washington was good. The story was good but it was depressing See more Jerod S @jeroduptown Jan 30 It's a schmaltzy, romanticized view of what having AIDS in the 90s might have been like. Though the court case itself is a no-brainer and done well by Denzel, the rest of the plot was flimsy. See more Pamela H. @hummus Jan 18 Mediocre at best. Great cast See more Carol E @RT96850143 Jan 13 I’ve seen this film several times over the years. The storytelling and performances are exceptional. The negative critic reviews? A classic example of armchair observers doling out reviews as if they know better. They don’t.
