What to Know

Critics Consensus

Perversely funny while giving its quartet of fine actors some of their best material yet, The Invite is a sophisticated farce that reaffirms Olivia Wilde as one of the most exciting filmmakers working today.

It’s rare that actor-directors direct their own best performances, but Wilde is alive in every frame. Go to Full Review

A frisky comedy for adults which takes a swinger-party turn, it's Wilde's strongest effort to date as a director...and lets her set off fireworks as a performer, too. Most refreshing is the frank talk about sex – and inhibitions – after 40. Go to Full Review

Definitely Wilde's best work to date, the chemistry is sublime. The actors come together to find a shared rhythm, the way a good jazz quartet does. At times discordant, at others wild and surprising, but always returning to the same mesmerizing vibe. Go to Full Review

One of the clever touches is the film’s score—or rather, its use of strings, whether it’s a violin, cello, or bass. They act as an entirely separate character, much like the iconic themes from Jaws or Friday the 13th. Go to Full Review

Intermittently hilarious, sad and thought-provoking, and many married couples will find it at least partly relatable. Go to Full Review

Tristan York 1d This is one of those movies that pokes fun at its core audience and exposes how sex is more of a subsequent of love than it is a great time. The acting is top notch as Seth Rogan and Olivia Wilde try to understand what the fuck is really going with the neighbors. 4.5 out of 5 only because you have to leave your inner child home. This is for the big kids See more Ron P 1d Even though I am not a Seth Rogen fan my wife and I enjoyed “The Invite” immensely! Ed Norton and Penelope Cruz were a perfect pair to offset Rogen! See more Raoul 2d Great dialogue. Anyone who has been in a relationship will relate. See more Kimberly G 2d There are many situations in this movie that resonate with real life.
