Critics Consensus

Black Narcissus doesn't quite escape the shadow of its cinematic forebear, but this miniseries sufficiently keeps the faith with excellent performances and visual splendor.

For those who have not had a chance to catch up with the original, the new series is not just satisfying, but if nothing else a beautiful farewell to the great Diana Rigg. Go to Full Review

High praise also goes to Rosie Cavaliero as practical Sister Briony, and Patsy Ferran, whose vivid features act their way right out from under that veil. Go to Full Review

Brain C @RT44398435 09/18/2024 beautiful production and art direction. was it slow? yes. was it bad? no. the costumes, sets, scenery, the way it was filmed...that's enough to keep me entertained. the performers did a good enough job. if you're looking for a bubblegum Hollywood special fx blockbuster, this is not for you. See more lucas g @Floral_emissions 10/09/2022 Beautifully shot, and excellent performances from the casting. I dont´t really get the hate and dislikes for this series, i enjoyed it a lot. See more Nicole C @RT86060742 07/12/2021 Slow, boring, a slog to get through. 3 episodes at 1.5 hours apiece and I couldn't even get past the second episode. I'm no stranger to slow-burn and I actually like a lot of shows/movies that fit that description but for some reason I couldn't get interested enough in the characters and plot of this one to finish it. Halfway through the second episode (of 3 total episodes) and nothing of note happened. Sure, there were whisps of hints of things to come. There was foreshadowing (possibly) and small, strange things but nothing that kept my attention or made me want to "see what happens next". I'm angry I wasted the time I did on this. I'll take some people's advice and spend the rest of my time watching the original film instead. Nothing can be duller than watching almost 2 hours of this borefest except maybe watching paint dry. See more 03/05/2021 Horny nuns in remote Himalayas, ghost is probably not the issue....just isolation and bone See more ML C @RT85267343 03/02/2021 Ok, sadly, somewhat less than the sum of its parts. Yay for the production designers and the location shooting and the gorgeous cast of Nepali and Himalayan background and support. Yay for the truly mind-bending decision to make a show about Anglican nuns going insane in the Himalayas. So weird. I still can't believe someone decided to write a novel about that in the 1930s, but so glad it happened. Sigh for the missed opportunities of a program that didn't commit to a full-on psychological breakdown, OR a full-on haunt, OR a full-on realist drama. OR the fan-service ending that was staring us all in the face and then punted. See more Ęxçëşș M @ExcessMale 02/21/2021 The convincing performances, eye catching locale and complex characters make this mini-series remake of a 1940's classic watchable enough while the script makes it so forgettable.
