Black Narcissus: Miniseries (2020)

Black Narcissus

Critics Consensus

Black Narcissus doesn't quite escape the shadow of its cinematic forebear, but this miniseries sufficiently keeps the faith with excellent performances and visual splendor.

Critic Reviews for Black Narcissus Miniseries

All Critics (27) | Top Critics (17)

For those who have not had a chance to catch up with the original, the new series is not just satisfying, but if nothing else a beautiful farewell to the great Diana Rigg.

Apr 6, 2021 | Rating: 3.5/5 | Full Review…

"Black Narcissus" is a beautiful production but its melancholic tone is a hard sell to keep audiences sustained over three episodes.

Nov 23, 2020 | Rating: C+ | Full Review…

It struggles for three hours to justify its existence.

Nov 20, 2020 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…

It is succinct and well-told in the three hour-long episodes... But there are characters and themes that certainly could have benefited from intelligent expansion.

Nov 19, 2020 | Full Review…

High praise also goes to Rosie Cavaliero as practical Sister Briony, and Patsy Ferran, whose vivid features act their way right out from under that veil.

Jan 7, 2021 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review…

Handsome though this drama was, it had its faults.

Jan 7, 2021 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Danish cinematographer Charlotte Bruus Christensen's (A Quiet Place, The Girl on the Train) TV directing debut certainly boasts plenty of searing imagery, talking points and opportunities for raised eyebrows.

Jan 4, 2021 | Full Review…

Doubling as the director, Christensen is helped by an impressive performance by Gemma Arterton as Sister Clodagh.

Dec 28, 2020 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

The repression of desire in a lonesome spot turns into acting pyrotechnics in this version.

Nov 30, 2020 | Full Review…

While it's got the standard BBC tentpoles of great locations and fine acting, we were left not only cold by the first episode, but thoroughly bored.

Nov 26, 2020 | Full Review…

Black Narcissus is solid for what it is, and if FX was looking for its first entry to be good looking but unremarkable, it's scored well.

Nov 25, 2020 | Full Review…

This version, despite being well-paced and well-acted, is a dud, relying on tropes and caricatures of the local citizens.

Audience Reviews for Black Narcissus: Miniseries

Horny nuns in remote Himalayas, ghost is probably not the issue....just isolation and bone
  • Mar 02, 2021
Ok, sadly, somewhat less than the sum of its parts. Yay for the production designers and the location shooting and the gorgeous cast of Nepali and Himalayan background and support. Yay for the truly mind-bending decision to make a show about Anglican nuns going insane in the Himalayas. So weird. I still can't believe someone decided to write a novel about that in the 1930s, but so glad it happened. Sigh for the missed opportunities of a program that didn't commit to a full-on psychological breakdown, OR a full-on haunt, OR a full-on realist drama. OR the fan-service ending that was staring us all in the face and then punted.

The convincing performances, eye catching locale and complex characters make this mini-series remake of a 1940's classic watchable enough while the script makes it so forgettable.
  • Jan 22, 2021
I really enjoyed this although I was left feeling like it could have been longer. Very dreary and almost gothic feeling at points. Very sad and dark story about repression and faith with a hint of the supernatural. Great performances by the cast.

    Borderline incoherent
  • Jan 12, 2021
A bit rubbish, pointless, depressing, drawn out. lots of adjectives to describe this three part series.
  • Dec 30, 2020
I don't get all the hate surrounding this. I haven't read the book or seen the film, so maybe this is where comparative bias can seep in. Judging this on its own merits, I would overall say that they could have done better but they still created an engaging drama. Hats off to Gemma Arterton and Alessandro Nivola for their great performances that pretty much carried the show. From the first moment they met you could feel the undeniable chemistry between them. An interesting story which with a bit more time and effort could have been superb.

Black Narcissus 1947 is one of my favorites. I was a bit apprehensive when I saw a mini series was being made, I vowed not to watch. I decided to give it a chance and I was entertained. I think they did a pretty good job. I did like the acting and the slight additions to the story while not changing the story I'm familiar with, yes there was a bit of extra filler but it was fine. It does not surpass the perfection of the 1947 version but they did make it their own and it was entertaining. I would recommend it.

I have not seen the movie version. So, I can't compare the 2 versions. I really enjoyed this TV mini-series. Beautiful cinematography, well acted. It kept my interest throughout all 3 episodes.

I don't understand why people aren't raving about this! I found it beautiful to watch, engaging story, brilliant performances. I watched the whole thing in a day (with some breaks) and was grateful for it. Highly recommended!
