A series like Nurse Jackie is a rare gem because it manages to entertain, instruct, and debunk traditional stereotypes about nursing all at the same time.

The sorts of moral dilemmas that would take up an entire episode of Grey's Anatomy - organ donation, assisted suicide - pass by here without a blink. Characters make their choices, then move on. This is a show about consequences, not actions.

This is a character study, and the pleasures are in the performances, chiefly Falco's as a person more strung-out than Dr. House and more crackling than an impatient diner waitress.

A splendid new addition to pay-cable's stock of dark comedies that keep a human heart beating behind the laughs.

The series isn't breaking any new ground, but Falco gives us a Jackie with no fuss or apologies: just direct, bedrock believability.

A top-notch supporting cast, a funny, wry tone and some really solid writing rounded out this satisfying season

Maybe it's simply Edie Falco's pitch-perfect performance, or a strong, multi-faceted, impeccably realized female role crafted by writers Liz Brixius, Evan Dunsky and Linda Wallem. Either way, Nurse Jackie makes for a fascinating character study.

Nurse Jackie isn't a very good show. If anything (save a few things here or there) it belongs on Lifetime more than it does on Showtime.

Dec 21, 2018 | Full Review…

Its episodes are only half an hour long; it's bleak as a comedy and silly as a drama; and it's got a fairly despicable female lead. All of which, of course, makes for fantastically entertaining TV.

Falco is piercingly good, enough to make you wish the writing was as sharp as her performance; Jackie's character is a walking emotional landmine, roaming through too many hackneyed medical-show dilemmas.

Edie Falco as a addictive nurse in the ICU. Living a problematic life at all fronts. Swept in chaos and darkness, she somewhat escapes the black hole.
