This Showtime drama focuses on the early years of King Henry VIII's nearly 40-year reign (1509-1547) of England. The series looks at Henry's famous female companions like Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn and delves into his relationships with important figures like Sir Thomas More, Cardinal Wolsey (head of the Catholic Church of England during its break with Rome) and Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, who was Henry's best friend and unofficial adviser.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Henry's sordid story is concluded in a truncated manner that nevertheless provides closure, although viewers may feel that the ruler's most interesting lovers and opponents had already lost their heads before this fourth and final season.

I've come to admire Hirst's sex-charged costume drama for its deft blending of gossip and governance. Go to Full Review

Everything happens way too fast. Sure, it wouldn't be interesting to have a show that lasts seven years before anything exciting happens, but The Tudors makes Henry seem like a kid who gets bored with his toys every five minutes. Go to Full Review

Though not always exactly historically accurate, real life events do dictate that King Henry VIII outlives most of the series' most interesting characters... Thus, we begin season four with a dearth of vibrant characters to hold our interest. Go to Full Review

After four marvelous seasons chock-full of royal intrigue, romance and decadence, Showtime's majestic soap The Tudors ends on an appropriately melancholy note. Go to Full Review

The Tudors has been all dressed up with plenty of places to go and ample beheadings to behold. It's been a romp at times, but also a richly textured morality play in which an all-powerful king cast himself as God and greatly relished the role. Go to Full Review

It wrapped up most of the plotlines neatly yet made me feel a strong desire to go buy a big, heavy book about England post-Henry VIII so I can find out more. Go to Full Review

Edward L @Glyndower Dec 28 If 'The Tudors' had been a tenth as amusing as 'The Borgias' then it might have worked. Why was the latter cancelled while the former was allowed to limp on through a fourth series. See more Kaitlyne S. @ALSWarrior74 Oct 28 I love the show in its entirety, however this last season fell short for me and seemed a little rush towards the last years of his life renogram too long of a time period into too short of a season See more Patrick C @RT23453395 06/20/2024 Great show, I watched it twice. See more lanfranco c @Lanfrancobz 07/07/2017 A great end for a good historical series See more 02/29/2016 Excellent series showing the complexity of the English court and the terror of living under a monarchs whims. I think the final episode was one of the best done endings that I've seen. See more 05/26/2015 One of the very best. If only I knew of it sooner! See more Read all reviews
