A small eatery called Meshiya -- also referred to as the Midnight Diner -- resides in the back alley of a bustling district. Despite the eatery's unusual hours, 12 a.m. to 7 a.m., a menagerie of customers flock to the establishment each night for a bite to eat and to visit with the proprietor, known as the Master. While there is a menu, which includes pork miso soup set, sake, beer and shochu, the Master makes whatever his customers request. As patrons bond with the Master, they find nourishment for their bellies and their souls.

The sharing of comfort food is at the heart of all these tales, along with the personal stories and aspirations of an unlikely community, drawn together in a confessional-like space, adrift on the fringes of one of the world's largest cities. Go to Full Review

Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories is just as woozy and narcoleptic as you would imagine. Go to Full Review

Like Japanese food itself it's easy to digest, but contains substantive depth. Go to Full Review

Midnight Diner is almost meditative in its languid narrative and it might not be something you'd like to binge all night but savour one bite at a time. Go to Full Review

Ken D 02/17/2025 'Midnight Diner' offers a delightful glimpse into Japanese culture, food, and humour. Completely binge-worthy, this subtitled show draws you into a world of quirky, mysterious characters, beautiful Japanese women, and gentle yet deeply engaging storylines. The show’s clever direction places you right at the bar, sipping a cold beer or savouring a bowl of mouthwatering miso, freshly crafted by Master—both chef and spiritual compass. So pull up a stool, order something delicious, and unwind with one of TV’s most chill-out shows. You’ll want to book a trip to Tokyo—and the 1-minute cooking lesson at the end of each episode is the perfect cherry on top. Arigatō! See more Stuart H 06/08/2024 Easy watch, great characters who never seem out of place well acted by the cast, heartwarming stories bought together by the love of food and good company. I couldn’t stop watching it and loved every minute!!! See more G P 04/14/2024 Absolutely amazing, every episode is themed with a dish and a patron of the diner who orders it, behind the dish there is always a story, heartfelt and really genuine. What i like is that it also shows a bit of underbelly of japanese culture. One of the better shows i have seen in years! See more John M 05/21/2023 The different episodes talks about the life struggles of the customers and life of Japanese in general and somehow Master Chef is like the Godfather where everyone consults with him on what to do with their Life. It's a simple and yet tells you the harsh realities of Life which is sometimes a life crisis moment on your life as well. Rating it a 5 since I love japanese food and its culture. THANK YOU See more Tweety K @Birdissa 11/01/2022 If there was ever a perfect series on Netflix, this is it. Midnight Diner is a work of art. Every episode involves a story based on the dreams, wants, hopes or fears of a regular patron of the diner. It is set in Tokyo in modern times. The stories are sublime. To me, Japan is the best at presenting moments of perfection, be it in their arts, their gardens, the beauty of Mt. Fuji, the perfection of a sushi tray or the ancient ways of the Samurai. This series is doesn't disappoint. It captures another form of perfection. Perfection of storytelling. It should be watched by people who consider themselves connoisseurs of the aesthetic.
