Stephen King's 1980 novella "The Mist" -- adapted into a feature film by Frank Darabont in 2007 -- is re-imagined this time for TV by executive producer/writer Christian Torpe. Set in the small town of Bridgeville, Maine, the story centers on a family torn apart by a heinous crime. In the aftermath, they are suddenly cut off from the rest of the world when an eerie, foreboding vapor unleashes predatory creatures onto the streets. Family, friends, and adversaries become strange bedfellows, battling the mysterious mist and its threats, as the rules of society break down.

The Mist's absorbing atmosphere and solid special effects struggle to overcome a generally uninspired story and performances.

Not nearly enough horror, way too much exposition (in the opener). Even the fog seems a little bored hanging around for something to happen. Go to Full Review

Overall, the first episode of the Spike series does a fine job setting up its central characters. Go to Full Review

This Spike TV show takes just as much interest in the reactions of seemingly sane folk to imminent danger as the nature of that danger itself, pairing the chills of horror with a considered psychological component. Go to Full Review

The Mist is one of the most disappointing series of the summer. I had great hopes for this adaptation of the classic King story, but unfortunately, it didn't meet any of my expectations. Go to Full Review

Spike's new series based on "The Mist" (which was made into a Frank Darabont film in 2007, with a controversial altered ending) wasn't written by King, but it does the author proud. Go to Full Review

Like King's last TV series, "Under the Dome," "The Mist" would seem to have a short shelf life. One hour with these people and you'll be rooting for the critters. Go to Full Review

C 1 Aug 5 its realy good i dont see why ppl are saying its bad the only thing i hated are the guns thay didnt use them that much but the show was good maybe its cuz ppl watched it back in 2017 and in 2025 ppl see it good See more Hughe J @Hughe Jul 29 The Mist series was a television show released in 2017 and is very loosely based on the short story of the same name written by Stephen King. The show is set in Bridgeville Maine where a mist has covered the town and people that go into the mist die. People get trapped in various locations, see scary apparitions, go crazy, or start killing each other. Unlike the book it's implied that the mist is actually killing people instead of the monsters inside of it but we do get to see a spider in a jar halfway through the season, wow. The show is dark, as in somebody please turn on a light switch, the characters are unlikeable, and the plot is boring. Frank Darabont's movie version of The Mist released ten years earlier set up this world so much better in every way. As a fan of that movie, and King's short story it's based on, this series just left me disappointed. See more Ricardo K Jul 29 Started it, got lectured twice about "toxic white masculinity" in the first ten minutes. Turned it off again. This obviously wasn't made for me. See more Merry Meri Jul 12 Spoilers! The incest plotline? I don't understand why that was necessary after showing Jay and Alex bonding and making their relationship likeable to the audience. It was extremely ridiculous. Not only that but Eve was also doing something Kevin had told her not to do after he had allegedly died. "We can't tell her I'm not the father." Then the moment he passes she finds her opportunity and takes it. See more Mark C Mar 20 I think it’s less about the Mist, and more about pushing its own agenda. It wasn’t long before white entitlement and gender free love were introduced. Not sure that was part of the book. (ENGLISH) From the very first episode, The Mist makes it clear that it doesn’t live up to Stephen King’s novel or Frank Darabont’s film. Instead of building an oppressive atmosphere where the mist feels like a real threat, the series gets lost in personal conflicts and uninteresting characters. What was originally a gripping story about fear and survival turns into a messy drama that fails to engage. The characters make absurd decisions, the tension never really builds, and worst of all, the mist itself becomes secondary. It’s supposed to be the core of the horror, yet the series treats it like mere background while getting tangled in pointless subplots. There are a few moments that could have worked better if the rest had been properly developed, but they are isolated sparks in an otherwise weak execution. In the end, The Mist feels like a completely wasted opportunity. It’s not scary, it’s not engaging, and worst of all, it lacks the essence of the book. A forgettable series that, instead of enhancing the original story, dilutes it in a sea of bad choices. See more Read all reviews
