Critic Reviews for True Detective Season 2

All Critics (87) | Top Critics (44)

It's that the second season of True Detective feels ordinary while the first felt extraordinary... The ordinariness is a quality that weighs heavily on True Detective because its cop-show genre is all over TV.

All of the lead actors dig deeply into their roles, with Farrell playing the wary, weary burnout to perfection, and Vaughn shifting into full-throttle intensity.

It may be impossible for it to strike TV lightning twice, but True Detective in its second iteration definitely has a charge.

Jun 19, 2015 | Full Review…

There's a lot of plot that makes the first couple of episodes a bit difficult to ease into, but at the end of the second episode, Pizzolato's penchant for abrupt violence with a side of freakiness will leave you with panting for more.

True Detective is a very different beast in its second season: less Cthulhu and more garden-variety lizard. It doesn't haunt so much as slither.

Jun 18, 2015 | Full Review…

Is it the breakthrough, landmark television of the first season? No. But it is a rock-solid crime drama with film caliber production values, intriguing plotting and great performances.

Jun 18, 2015 | Full Review…

A strange combination of slick overproduction and basic incompetence.

Oct 19, 2018 | Full Review…

There's no problem with the acting talent or the pungently evocative cinematography, but what we need to know is whether this new series can carve itself a niche distinct from its rather-too-familiar antecedent.

There are virtues in the second season of 'True Detective' that are forming an intimate and strong coherence between the two deliveries. [Full Review in Spanish]

By episode three this year, we're no closer to understanding how any of its leads fit together in their differing dynamics, or which investigation (of several corruption scandals) to follow.

Pizzolatto's writing is not without its irritations, particularly his dialogue... Ultimately, the characters are too fascinating to turn loose of.

Anyone who tells you the original was an instant hit from the word go is lying. It took at least two, maybe three episodes before viewers became fully attuned to its offbeat rhythms. Season two looks like it could be heading along a similar path.

I love it!!! I would watch this season once and again..👏🏼

I dont know what happened here, its like the show completely did a 180. It is nothing like the first season. The first season was intense and intriguing from beginning to end. This season was very anticlimactic and dull. The performances and characters were not enough to save the boring story line. The entire time you're watching the show and youre thinking okay were on the last episode and 30 minutes in and still none of the plots have been resolved - that alone should tell you how disappointing it is. The show drags from plot point to plot point often going no where. You really don't care about the characters at all especially Vince Vaughn's. His performance falls flat, you simply don't buy whatever it is he is trying to sell. By the time you finish the show you're going to be thinking... well that was dumb. Production is great and few action scenes were okay. There are a very few memorable moments if any, other than that this is a show you an definitely pass on. It has nothing do with the first season and is pretty much a very different show from the first. If you are expecting anything similar to the first season you will be extremely disappointed. Trust me, you can pass on this one.

This show has some punch, but it had the misfortune of following season 1.

Was an uphill climb to follow Season one but stand alone the show the was good. Colin Farrel gave a great performance. Cant say the same for some of the other cast members on Season 2. Plus, the character development on Season 2 didn't go as deep as Season 1, which I think contributed a lot to the overall arc of the story.

Just an awful attempt to try to add a different style of a story, that didn't hold anywhere near the same intrigue and spark the first one did. Maybe there are some moments that save it, I think the acting is the only real positive of this show, but sadly it's ruined by a bad writing.

They really really tried with this one. It felt like they filmed the first draft of the script. Tons of potential, but what wasn't recycled from Ellroy's The Big Nowhere felt imported from inspiration without being refined into actual drama. Vince Vaughn was miscast. If they cut out Taylor Kitsch's character and Vince's scenes away from Collin Farrell and did another (or first) dialogue revision past, I'd probably add two more stars.

Gorgeous. This is not the same creature as TD, season 1 - nor should it be - but it whispers in the same voice, the same artistry. I loved Lera Lynn's haunting music. For me, the final episode is what really elevated Season 2 … it was already gorgeous, but I felt it was just below season 1 in emotional impact. Then I saw Omega Station and everything changed. Intense, emotional, and unexpected without tricking the audience. Season 1 was folkloric, with a mythic vibe that you don't see often on television. It was perfect. Season 2 is much grittier and violent. Both explore human nature and frailty, things hidden in plain sight, and the inescapable past.

gets a bad rap compared to season 1 but i found it be gritty, real and awesome
  • Mar 30, 2019
Just absolutely brilliant, much better than Season 1 and 3 in my opinion. Don't believe the fools who hate on this just because it isn't continuing with the Season 1 story. This is an Anthology and each season has it's own location, story and characters.

Despite trying to shift the focus to the female role, Colin Farrel eats everything, bet per episode.
