Though not the most sure-footed of superhero entries, as an offbeat perspective on the genre, "They Call Me Jeeg" merits an enthusiast's look.
Comfortable with sleaze but a far cry from being Italy's answer to Deadpool, the pic isn't funny or daring enough to make much of an entry into a spandex-saturated American market.
Italy finally gets its own superhero, and the results are surprisingly gritty and thoroughly enjoyable.
What superhero cinema really needs is a little weirdness; some unpredictability... and Italy has heard the call and responded with They Call Me Jeeg Robot.
The characters' imaginations have been fed by the same pop culture that feeds ours; everyone acts the roles of the people they would like to be, but we see the cracks in the façades. Those cracks fuel the tensions of the film.
Should you fancy a different but still hopeful take on the origin story there's much to enjoy.
Equal parts campy pulp and gritty crime drama, Jeeg pulls the unusual combo off well, regularly dipping toes into very dark waters while always maintaining a deviant sense of humor.
It's hard to know how seriously to take the overlong tale's critique of mob corruption in government. There are many good popcorn moments, though, all done on the cheap.
Despite being a little heavy and disjointed, this is irreverent, mad-cap fun.
despite all these storytelling modes, at base the film has little of substance to say - and, at nearly two hours, takes far too long to say it.
