Jan 26, 2023The premise is really good - alien artefact arrives on Earth. Scientists try to find it's meaning, while a ship is sent to the star that it is "pointing" at to scout for further information (they say the artefact is is "pointing" to a specific star - which is impossible given the direction the artefact is pointing from the ground, it's location on the Earth, the Earths daily rotation, and the Earths rotation around the Sun - but whatever). It's set in a "near-future", so Faster-Than-Light travel is possible, as is a form of "stasis" called "Soma". A ship and crew is picked for a scouting mission (you get to see next to none of this) and then you're dumped straight into the ships crew being awoken. Led by Niko (Katee Sackoff), it's into drama from the off. And that's where the problems begin. Niko is the epitome of the Mary Sue for much of the show - need a top pilot to navigate asteroids, get Niko. Need a soldier with unwavering accuracy - get Niko. Need someone to beat the crap out of multiple armed attackers while unarmed, get Niko. Need to kill any threat to the mission - get Niko. Need to beat up someone while you are blind - Niko can do it. Need to sort out cures for viral life - Niko could do that to if she wanted. There really isn't a need for the rest of the crew - Niko can do it all. No reason, she just can. I would also say she is just so fundamentally unlikeable, that I was actually willing the crew to either kill her, or leave her behind at every opportunity. Talking of the crew - wow! Who in their right mind would have sent such a God-awful group of horny whiners on such an important mission? It was like watching a group of tweens on Spring break! William (ships computer AI), was a solid character for about three minutes with something truly likeable about his demeanour. But the writers seemed to decide he needed to be gradually eroded as the show goes on. He becomes less likeable, and more like the rest of the whiny crew - showing fear for his own life! He's a damn computer - who would do this to a computer AI? It's just laughable that *this* crew would be sent out to scout alien life and *possibly* initiate first contact. No matter what the aliens wanted, the chances are that with this crew, negotiations would lead to war. It's such a shame - the casting seemed pretty solid Erik, Niko, William, Cass, Harper - all superb actors taking on these roles. But the script is a mess with every episode trying to cram a Marvel trilogy story of teen, high school drama, into 45 minutes. The writing is appallingly bad, both for character development and in terms of plot holes and continuity. Is it watchable - yes (just). Is it great. No. But it passes the time while you wait for something better - if you can stomach the constant crew drama.

Jan 04, 2023I don't know why you don't like it. I adore him. We are human aren't we? Although it's okay to have feelings... what's wrong with you guys..

Jan 01, 2023Started off promising, a glimpse into the future of climate change, a woman heading a first contact mission. But as soon as we meet the rest of the crew, it falls apart. We have people in space who have never met each other, people who are reactionary and have hostile attitudes when challenged on *anything* and they even sent the ship's usual captain on the mission like that wasn't going to create problems. So this requires a mighty amount of suspension of disbelief but it's okay as background watching while I crochet. Could've been loads better though.

Dec 29, 2022This show feels like an untalented writer threw every sci-fi thrope at the wall, but nothing sticks, bad in every conceivable way. How can a civilisation can be capable of faster than light travel, and yet not have a single sane or competent individual to send on first contact mission.

Dec 04, 2022It started interesting, but after a couple of episodes the story and characters come completely boring

Aug 16, 2022I liked it at first, but it began to drag on. These characters have way too many problems that they encounter and it gets tedious. I watched both seasons, but don't think I would want to see a 3rd. Let it go

Aug 14, 2022I tried to like this show, the science and the special effects are pretty good. But I can't explain it, Has lots of action (too much really)-It bores me. Maybe it's the aspect that I don't believe the government would put a bunch of hormone raging 20 somethings in charge of a mission to save the Earth. At least they have a Momma.

Jul 24, 2022Well here goes, a show that is given so many bad reviews that in my opinion are completely unfounded and here are my reasons. Firstly, it's been a long long time since I have seen a modern show play such a vintage theme, it puts in mind late 70s early 80s shows such as Blakes 7 not because it looks like those older shows but simply because of the script is action led. We are given no time to reflect on this show because every second provides the writers with a chance to move forwards into areas that are sometimes surprising and sometimes obvious therefore I feel that the writing is a strong point. So many shows these days rely on filler and I found very little filler when watching this series only action. Secondly, the lighting on the show is a very much overlooked strong point that many viewers simply do not pick up on. The lighting is used to create mood and atmosphere in a way that is just not seen these days and that really stands out. Thirdly, the ship looks well above average from the outside and yes, maybe a little low budget on the inside but the decor never gets in the way of the action, we are not caught in special effects city with this show but rather allowed to enjoy the plot. One criticism I really don't understand here is how quite a few have noted the youth of the crew, these actors seem to have been picked for age and look rather than experience. Would you seriously send a bunch of OAPs on this mission? I'm 50 years young and you would not want to see me walking on the side of a ship in space suit trust me . I make a prediction that in time Another Life will be seen as a cult classic just not now. Maybe when the aliens land we will finally place the series in its rightful place :)
