Another Life: Season 1 (2019)

Season 1
Another Life

Critics Consensus

A hodgepodge of science fiction homage, Another Life lacks the distinctive spark necessary to set it apart from the array of stories it aspires to be.

    Oof, that was Rotten.

    Meh, it passed the time.

    It’s good – I’d recommend it.

Critic Reviews for Another Life Season 1

All Critics (18) | Top Critics (5)

Netflix's Another Life sometimes feels like it's trying to break a record for sci-fi fiction tropes.

Jul 25, 2019 | Full Review…

Another Life is an unwieldy mashup of Arrival and any number of space-odyssey adventure serials, and struggles to maintain clarity or depth with either half of its bifurcated storyline.

If Another Life were a spoof called Instagrammers in Space, it would be a work of genius. Unfortunately, it takes itself deadly seriously, to the point of unwitting self-parody.

Aug 6, 2019 | Full Review…

I'm convinced that Another Life is a unique space drama, but unfortunately genuity does not always mean good, and Another Life fails to be an immersive experience like that of the genres it draws from.

Aug 7, 2019 | Full Review…

The entire series seems like a parodic sketch that could be titled "Instagrammers in Space," except that there isn't one single humorous moment. [Full Review in Spanish]

Aug 1, 2019 | Full Review…

Another Life feels frustratingly unsettled. For the first five episodes it seems to leap between everything from sci-fi horror to psychological thriller, pulling off neither particularly well.

Jul 31, 2019 | Rating: 6/10 | Full Review…

Honestly, it has filled me with an exhilarating, hate-filled joy. There are moments when you feel like you're about to choke on the dumb, but then the soundtrack slams you with an ill-timed EDM number, and instead you start surfing the maudlin, cackling.

Sep 5, 2019 | Full Review…

Occasionally, Another Life will land a decent surprise, or provide an emotional moment that resonates, but its main super-power seems to be making the perils of space travel incredibly boring.

Jul 26, 2019 | Rating: 5/10 | Full Review…

Another Life has pieces of other compelling sci-fi properties, however there's nothing unique or substantial to build a foundation for this space saga to stand on.

Jul 26, 2019 | Rating: 1/5 | Full Review…

It's hard to call a sci-fi show ridiculous, but Another Life is just that.

Jul 26, 2019 | Full Review…

Another Life [is] a pleasantly cluttered new Netflix series that hybridizes Arrival, Annihilation and Interstellar into something less heady and more adventure-driven.

Jul 24, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

But instead of using those themes and tropes to explore something new or exciting, Another Life is an unoriginal, jumbled mess filled with flimsy characters.

Audience Reviews for Another Life: Season 1

Poor plot, ridiculous "science" explanations, mediocre acting at best (exceptions are Niko and William), and character development was a horrendous blend of 90210/Melrose Place and Passions (or any other soap opera, they're all terrible), oh, but in space with alien threats. Throwing people in a group and writing in random sex scenes between characters is NOT character development, neither is dealing with continual mechanical malfunctions or characters with hostile, toxic personalities (you know the one, she's finally dead, thank the gods). I know not every show can be The Expanse, but come on, this show didn't even come close. It was sophomoric and extremely painful to watch. We suffered through the whole season hoping it was going to get better; it never did, it only got worse... how it garnered a season 2 is mind boggling.

Diversity seems forced and shallow. Very amateurish and superficial.

Why the political correctness is spreading everywhere, it ruins the experience of almost all the movies and series nowadays.
  • Feb 19, 2020
Extremely poorly written with unrealistic character interactions and gratuitous sexual debauchery. It was clearly written by someone trying to push a social/political agenda instead of providing an entertaining story. This was one of the shows that got me to cancel my netflix subscription.

I dont understand the negative reviews at all. While I certainly hated a large swath of the crew, the story, setting, and the handful of crew I did like kept me going. It was so fresh that some many problems were space problems and not "earth is bad and ppl suck". Looking forward to season 2.

Basically a bunch of crybaby children going on a very stereotypical adventure in space. Do yourself a favor and watch reruns of Star Trek.

I checked this out relatively recently because it sounded pretty cool, and um.....have some thoughts. A few things I liked but many I hated.WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD............... * I'll be blunt - the two things I hated most: 1 The immaturity of the crew (especially Michelle with her temper tantrums) and 2. That weird random sex threesome. WTF? I'm no prude and i don't mind some sexy time mixed in with my scifi but COME ON. If you are going to put sex in there it should make some damn sense and relate to the plot or character development. And it should be tasteful. I felt like it turned into soft core porn all of a sudden and it was awkward has hell. I WANTED to like it. I thought it had potential. I gave it a chance and watched the entire season.'s kind of a hot mess. Niko and William are the only good things/people in this show. I have more thoughts but going to stop there.

It's captivating and the story and acting are good. I'm looking forward to season 2.
